On the 11 May Jean wrote to her sister Mary:
“We arrive at Suez Bay at 1pm, and wait there for the convoy to go through canal tonight. Mail comes on at Suez even though we don’t go ashore.”
As the Himalaya sailed through the Canal at night, Jean did not leave any account of that part of the journey, nor of the ship’s calling at the end of the canal in Port Said. According to the schedule Jean received prior to sailing, the Himalaya was to arrive at Port Said at 8.00am and depart at 2.00pm. Assumed she went ashore as amongst her papers is a postcard wallet from Port Said, with a few of the postcards still inside:
