Crossing the Great Australian Bight, 23-25 April

Letter to Mary, 25 April:

“Please excuse the hurried letter – I’m trying to get a few written to post tomorrow at Freemantle….not much life on board yet. Paid 3/- to enter sports competitions after Freemantle.

Had some “beaut” games of deck tennis – the best of it is one minute the deck’s there, the next it’s gone. I was stiff as a poker.

We had a rough day yesterday, but today has been perfect – sunny calm almost summer.

Ran out of ink there, so had to wait till this morning.

We’re coming into Fremantle it now being 7.30. Will probably go up by bus to Perth, look around then back a different way. The tour costs 10/-.

This ship gets places too quickly – not time between ports to write letters. This will have to be the last before Freemantle. Sorry I haven’t written to Marj this time.

Remember me to Mr & Mrs Bates. Love from Jean.”
