“Dear Mary, it’s about time I wrote to you isn’t it? I’ve neglected all my correspondence lately, waiting until I knew definitely what I was doing.
Mum has told you no doubt, that I went to Inverness for a week before we came down here. I stayed at the YWCA there and did day trips. I went up on the Monday. Tuesday I went to Loch Maree and Gairloch – the loveliest trip I’ve done so far as scenery goes. The colours on the hillsnow are unbelievable – the heather and autumn colours in the grasses. Loch Maree is called the mirror set in the hills and although we saw it on a dull day, it was glorious. And the western coast with its towering hills and sandy bays and rocky cliffs is beautiful. We went through miles and miles of mountains and moors – the west highlands are fascinating, I like them better than any part I’ve seen.”
