Dining and the good life – 27 April 1951

Now the true voyage began – with eight days sailing on the open seas ahead before next land-fall in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Jean was now settling into the daily routine aboard the Himalaya, dominated by deck sports, evening dances and games and dining, lots of dining! Jean kept the menu cards from the 27 April, showing delights such as scotch kippers for breakfast, mashed swedes on the lunch menu, and Sheep’s Tongues for dinner – got to love 1950’s cuisine!

The Himalaya’s tourist class Dining Room, where Jean would have dined on board.

“Friday 27th: Sports comps on board have started. Enjoyed 500 tonight.”

From Jean’s rough journal jottings on P & O Himalaya note paper.
